Riders Injured at Pine Top
Thomson, GA, USA
by Amber Heintzberger
Rebecca Howard and Roquefort
Experienced three-day eventing competitors Jan Byyny and Rebecca Howard have been hospitalized following falls at the Pine Top Spring Advanced Horse Trials in Thomson, Georgia over the weekend.

Successful international competitor and a popular Young Riders coach, Byyny, Purcellville, VA was competing in the preliminary division aboard a young horse, Wallstraed. She is currently in the ICU at the MCGHealth Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia where she is being treated for a concussion with complications. It has been requested that her privacy is respected during her hospitalization.

Canadian Rebecca Howard, who is resident trainer at The Fork Farm in Norwood, NC was competing her horse Roquefort in the advanced division. They had a rotational fall over a vertical gate near the end of the course. Roquefort walked away from the fall but Howard broke both collarbones and several ribs and punctured a lung. She was transported to Charlotte, North Carolina for treatment closer to home.

Howard's accident and treatment have been thoroughly documented with sensitivity and humor on Sinead Halpin's blog, and updates are posted frequently.

Both Byyny's and Howard's Facebook pages are flooded with well wishes from friends and fans.

Canadian Rebecca Lee, riding Gold Twist in Advanced-A1, also was taken away in an ambulance after she suffered a minor concussion but is doing fine.

US Olympian Karen O'Connor also had a fall in the preliminary division from Ronaldo and suffered a mild concussion which prompted her to withdraw the rest of her horses from the competition. She returned to Ocala, Florida where she is based for the winter.
