Irish European Longlisted Eventing Combinations Announced
Following several impressive performances by Irish combinations at the Barbury Castle CIC*** in England last weekend, team performance manager Lars Christensson announced nine riders from which the European Championship team will be picked in the coming weeks.
This year's championships take place in Pratoni del Vivaro, Italy from September 13-19.
Highest-placed of the Irish last weekend in 13th place with Kilkishen, newly-inducted Captain Geoff Curran has been named with both this mount and Balladeer Alfred, who also had a good run.
"I was delighted with Kilkishen," he said. "He rarely touches a pole so I was unlucky, but both his dressage and cross-country were excellent."
Joining Curran on the list is Sally Corscadden with Millridge Kalmar, who finished next best of the Irish in 18th. The consistent gelding was having his first run since Punchestown.
"I had a bit of show jumping tuition from David Green the previous week and it really helped," said Corscadden. "He's also learnt to gallop and is now able to go faster cross-country and maintain his rhythm."
The remaining combinations have been named as Jonty Evans (Cregwarrior); Louise Lyons (Watership Down); Joseph Murphy (Master Boy); Austin O'Connor (Hobby Du Mee); Michael Ryan (Old Road); Sue Shortt (Stoneybrook) and Steven Smith (Quality VH).
"So far there have been a number of excellent performances, particularly from some riders who managed their programme very well early in the year and achieved their qualifying scores some time ago," Christensson said.
"The plan for these riders is to run at either Hartpury or Thirlestane Castle, after which final selections will be confirmed."
