Darren Chiacchia and Windfall II Still Top the Leaderboard Going Into the Final Day Of the World Cup Qualifier at The Fork
Norwood, NC, USA
Darren Chiacchia of Springville, NY, remains on top after two phases of the CICW*** FEI World Cup Qualifier of the Fork Farm Horse Trials as part of BB&T Outdoor Heritage Days Presented by Southeastern Materials, Inc.
The Olympic Team Bronze Medalist and his 2004 Athens Olympic mount Windfall II, sailed through the show jumping course designed by Marc Donovan without fault to keep their Dressage score of 33.80 penalty points going into the final day. Due to the threat of severe weather, Show Jumping was moved up to Saturday leaving the Cross Country phase for the final day on Sunday. "He was a super horse," said Chiacchia of his Trakehner Stallion. "Marc designed a beautiful course and my horse negotiated it really well."
The weather turned out to be less severe than anticipated, but Chiacchia and Windfall could not escape the rain.
"Per my usual luck, I had to ride during the hardest part of the downfall," said Chiacchia. "But he was fantastic. I am really excited about tomorrow." Kim Severson of Keene, VA, also went clean on her Thoroughbred gelding, Winsome Adante, to stand on her Dressage score of 34.70 penalties for second place. Phillip Dutton of Australia and House Doctor moved up from fifth to third due to a clean round, giving them a two phase score of 39.10 penalties.
