2001 Horse Trials BC Annual Report
HTBC has had a very busy year.
We have 587 members and recorded 1849 rides in 2001.
There were 13 sanctioned horse trials and one primary. New this year were a CCI* and a CIC** held at Osoyoos; a CIC*, CIC** and CIC*** held at Johvale and a Preliminary course at Michael Lake. Once again Chase Creek offered a CCI* and CCI** competition in late September.
Due to the previous lateness of the Omnibus for our early event start in B.C., we did our own mini-Omnibus and distributed it to our members. We have been assured that the Omnibus will be on schedule again this year so will not be publishing one this year ourselves.
We now have our B.C. logo on bumper stickers and garments for sale.
Our Newsletter is now online.
The B.C. Horse Trials Support Society has been dissolved. Funds from the casino held by this group were given to HTBC for our use under the strict guidance of the gaming commission. An application for another casino to benefit HTBC has been requested for 2002.
Three Spring clinics were held in B.C. One at Island 22 with clinicians Bruce Mandeville, Chelan Kozak and Sonja Crampton; one at Johvale with clinicians Karen Brain, Lynne Larsen, Sarah Bradley and Lynne Adams and one on Vancouver Island with Jeannine Ellingham. A Young Rider Summer camp was held at Chase Creek with Joni Peters and Chelan Kozak. Finally a Fall clinic was held in the Kootenays with Therese Washtock. These clinics were all partially subsidized by HTBC.
$5,000.00 was distributed for course development on an application basis.
$2,500.00 was given to Campbell Valley (who hosted the Pacific NW Team Championships), $1,000.00 was given to Island 22 (who hosted the BC Championships), and $1,500.00 was given to Osoyoos.
David Evans, from Great Britain, visited three horse trials sites in B.C. on the last leg of his trip across Canada. He lent his expertise to Johvale, Island 22 and Campbell Valley. Several BC Officials, course builders and organizers as well as interested people joined David on his tours.
A Safety Committee, made up of a broad cross section of our members, has been formed. An Organizers 101 manual has been drafted and we hope to have many, if not all, of it s recommendations in place for the 2002 season.
The HTC Lifetime Achievement Award to Pam Arthur was presented at Island 22 where Pam was designing the stadium jumping courses. Robin Haun was given his award at our AGM held last weekend where he did an educational forum on the roles of coaches and athletes . Both recipients were extremely pleased to be honoured.
Our Young Riders Committee has done a lot of work this year, further developing a YR handbook and encouraging team-building through fun fund-raising activities like the relay foot race around the track at Osoyoos and the infamous duck race at Chase Creek.
B.C. sent a team of Young Riders to Chicago to compete in the CCI*. Although only one rider was successful in completion, all felt the spirit camp leading up to the competition and the experience gained was well worthwhile. Riders were Shannon Higgins, Stacey Thorson, Shannon VanBeirt and Shandiss Wewoira. Grooms were Ashley Arnold, Jenna Brownjohn, Kayln Chalupa, and Tina Llewellan. Barn manager; Shaye Kozak. Coach Chelan Kozak. Chef d equippe Sarah Bradley.
Young Riders individuals were also given special prizes at the Chase Creek Event.
